[visual and kinetic novels](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_novel) are electronic media very often compared to video games for obvious reasons, but are more akin to digital "choose your own adventure" novels. they are largely text-driven, but may contain drawings, rendered characters, voice acting, and even gameplay elements.
